The Social Health Authority (SHA) has introduced a more easy, flexible, affordable and inclusive way for Kenyans to pay their annual health contributions.
Dubbed Lipa SHA Pole Pole or Lipa Mos Mos, this new option allows people in Kenya to remit SHA payments in affordable daily, weekly or monthly instalments to ensure no family is left behind in accessing healthcare.
By allowing small, consistent contributions, Lipa SHA Pole Pole helps Kenyans maintain continuous health coverage without undue strain on finances, besides strengthening the sustainability of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
Lipa SHA Pole Pole is a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs, mobile network operators, financial institutions and the Hustler Fund. The system has been touted as simple, mobile-based, and user-friendly to ensure every eligible citizen can access it without barriers.
How to Get Started with Lipa SHA Pole Pole
Anyone with a mobile phone can enroll into SHA and begin contributing immediately. Here is a step-by-step guide:
- Dial *147# on your mobile phone.
- A menu will pop up. Choose your category:
- 1: Kenyan Citizen
- 2: Foreign Resident
- 3: Refugee
- If you are a Kenyan citizen, select 1.
- Enter your ID number when prompted.
- Select 2: Make Payment
- Choose your preferred payment method:
- 1: Pay for Self
- 2: Lipa Pole Pole
- 3: Pay for Other
- If you choose Lipa Pole Pole, another menu will appear asking you to:
- Select a financier. Choose:
- 1: Hustler Fund
- Finally, pick a repayment plan that suits you:
- Daily
- Weekly
- Monthly
By May 2025, more than 22 million Kenyans had registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA). This is according to data released by the ministry of health indicating that SHA’s digital systems are now fully stable, supporting efficient delivery of services across the country.
The government noted that 1.2 million Kenyans, with claims processed amounting to Kshs 45 billion.
With many Kenyans working in informal sectors or relying on unpredictable incomes, Lipa SHA Pole Pole offers a fair, realistic way to stay protected. It guarantees access to health services without needing to pay large sums up front.
For self-employed individuals, SHA allows flexible payments through mobile money platforms such as M-Pesa, bank transfers, or at authorised centres. One may also register and manage their payments through the SHA online portal or at service desks such as Huduma Centres and designated hospitals.
SHA uses a Means Testing tool for households with non-fixed income. To use it:

- Log in and go to “My Profile”
- Under “Income,” select “Self-employed”
- Answer the questions under “Means Testing”
Your premium will be calculated based on your household size, living conditions, education level, and income. SHA will then suggest a monthly or annual contribution amount tailored to your ability.
