For the self-employed, just pay using mobile money, bank transfers, or authorised payment centres
Payment for the Social Health Authority (SHA) is part of the government’s efforts to ensure the attainment of universal health coverage (UHC) for all Kenyans. SHA contributions and payment processes depend on whether you are employed or self-employed.
To pay for your Social Health Authority (SHA) contributions, you can use the following methods:
1. Payment Through Employers: This applies to individuals who are formally employed. In this case, your employer will deduct your SHA contributions directly from your salary and remit them to SHA. This is similar to all other statutory deductions for other social programmes like the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).
2. Payment for Self-Employed Individuals: You can register and make payments voluntarily. Payments can be made using mobile money platforms like M-Pesa, bank transfers, or authorised payment centres.
You may need to log in to the SHA portal, and visit a service centre like Huduma Centre, SHA Desks or information desks set up in hospitals to register and obtain your payment details.
For self-employed individuals, SHA uses a means testing instrument to calculate the Social Health Authority Insurance Premium for households with a non-fixed monthly income.
Here is how to get access to means testing:
- Go to afyayangu.go.ke and log in
- Click My Profile
- Click Income and specify that you are self-employed
- Answer the questions under Means Testing
- SHA will calculate the monthly or annual amount to be paid based on your responses
Means testing considers various socio-economic aspects such as:
- Household composition and characteristics
- Housing characteristics
- Access to basic services
- Asset ownership
- Education
- Employment
Depending on how you respond to the questions posed above, your premiums will be calculated, and you will be presented with an amount that you are required to contribute towards SHIF, on a monthly and annual basis. After getting the figure, there are several methods you can use to pay your premiums.
