Dr. Mercy Korir

This active hiker and lover of sugarless tea, is also an accomplished medical doctor, award-winning Journalist and Business Executive.
Her multifaceted background seamlessly blends medical expertise with health journalism. Little wonder she established Kenya’s first-ever Multimedia Health and science Desk as Editor and Team Lead at Standard Group PLC.
Her notable accomplishments include conceptualising high-quality content for TV, radio, and digital platforms, hosting TV health shows, and amplifying revenue growth through strategic partnerships.
Indeed, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she was awarded The Presidential Order of Service Award – Uzalendo Award (2020) for her versatile and impactful health reporting.
A Fellow of the International Centre for Journalists, Dr Korir is currently a grantee of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to set up Willow Health Media, the first ever Health & Science Newsroom in Kenya and the region with a mission to deliver multimedia health and science content through digital platforms.
Besides her medical qualifications, Dr Korir holds master’s degrees in Communication Studies and Business Administration (Finance and Marketing) among other specialised training in leadership and journalism.
When not thinking, talking and dreaming matters health, Dr Korir is a footloose traveller and sucker for documentaries on megastructures and engineering- from buildings, bridges, airports, ships…such.

He is passionate about leveraging technology to solve challenges and drive innovation especially on projects that blend technology and communication. His expertise spans programming, system administration and content management systems (CMS), with a strong focus on integrating cloud-based solutions for optimizing workflows to improve operational efficiency. Imagine he got into IT out of curiosity on how technology can simplify complex tasks leading to a degree in computer science. He can’t forget once managing a server migration for an organization and successfully restoring functionality after critical database access was lost! Another high was implementing cloud based solutions which significantly improved a company’s operational efficiency, reducing downtime and increasing productivity. The lover of gospel music stays abreast of the latest advancements in cloud computing, security, and automation allows him to provide innovative solutions that support organizational goals. When not exploring new technological solutions, Vincent finds great fulfilment in evangelical missions, reading, particularly about technology advancements and inspirational topics, traveling to new places to broaden his understanding of the world and its diverse cultures.

Those close to this communication expert with a solid background in finance call her Riza or Twinnie due to her identical twin. Her ability to blend strategic communication (Daystar University) with financial acumen (JKUAT), allows her to translate complex concepts into clear, impactful messaging. This skill set has positioned her as a key contributor in various projects, where her expertise in both fields enhances her problem-solving abilities. A passionate Moi University educated multimedia journalist, Judah is adept at creating impactful content across print, television, and online platforms-which have sparked public discourse and policy discussions with his fearless reporting during the Covid-19 pandemic as a case in point. A fact-checking with unflagging zeal, Judah has conducted high-profile interviews with politicians, political analysts, economists and health experts besides nabobs at the UN and the Vice President of Ghana. His health interests, however, zero in on men’s mental health, physical and sexual heath to explore the stigma, challenges and disparities in care ‘as there’s a huge gap in coverage of men’s health.’ He also investigates addictions for insight on their impact besides bridging knowledge gaps in sexual health to promote safer practices. Add too stories on the role of fitness diet and nutrition in overall masculine wellbeing into that veritable mix. When not dissecting complex health stories, Juddah immerses himself in stoic philosophy and literature- think the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Charles Bukowski, James Baldwin, Dr Jordan Patterson. A skilled songwriter and guitarist, Juddah also strums his guitar and drawing inspiration from Gary Clark Jr, Sauti Sol, Boubacar Traore and Michael Kiwanuka, effortlessly belts out blends of Folk, Country and Rn’B.

She almost took to nursing, but the pen was mightier than the stethoscope leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication and Journalism from Moi University. But the passion for health remained and morphed into a health features writer covering human rights, policy and equity in health at The People Daily before rising to editor at The Standard Group Plc. Her career highlight, however, was being Coordinator of the Ghetto Mirror, a community newspaper ran by the Shining Hope for Communities, which published human-interest stories in more than 12 slums in Nairobi. As a trainee of the Internews Network in Kenya, this lover of bright colours especially orange, was among the cohort of Science journalists who extensively covered HIV and was nominated for the 2011 David Astor Journalism Awards. This 2021 graduate of the WAN-IFRA Women in News Accelerator Leadership Programme has successfully accomplished research and editorial projects with among others; the Kenya ICT Action Network, Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board and the Association of Media Women in Kenya. When not writing and editing, Mutheu has an eye for fancy cars from her Old Guy’s yellow Kombi with leather seats (but kept dropping the engine when gassing uphill) and a palate for good food. Boy!, she can cook up a storm in form of rice and beef stew.

Interests in health communication was piqued during undergraduate and graduate studies in Development Communication (University of Nairobi, School of Journalism & Mass Communication), and it was with an easy transition that he rose from Content Editor to Quality Assurance Editor for Health at Standard Group Plc.Kamau has particular fascination with the intersection between African cultures and health: How come not paying ruracio (bride price) affects fertility? How does smearing mafuta ya nguruwe (pig cud) on children (before going upcountry) create immunity against whooping cough and relatives with ‘bad eyes’? In fact, he won the CNN Multichoice African Journalist of the Year Award for a sports story titled Animal body parts and snake blood on the pitch’ which was a peek at soccer and superstition. Kamau also received a CNN Journalist of the Year Commendation for a business story that dissected the Placebo-Effect on consumers: Does changing corporate colours and slogans lead to increased profits? When not editing stories written in words ‘that can melt a mountain’, he loves long drives while listening to Earl Kluge, Isaiah Katumwa and Manu Dibango. Pitching a tent in the bush and cooking using open fire away from civilization is also not far from his beaten track. So is binge watching documentaries on spies and espionage missions -which like journalism is the gathering of information- with particular focus on their application to investigating medical fraud and corruption in health systems.

After all, elephants are the largest land animals with the capacity to communicate over long distances with infrasound! With red as her favourite colour, Sara brings a fun and energetic approach to work, a reflection of her infectious sunny disposition which she transfers to storytelling with a keen eye for detail and a knack for connecting with audiences. It is normal for her to move from the digital desk, television live show and still present news on the radio all within the hour! In another life, Sara, whose interest in women's and children’s health, food and nutrition, would have been a white coater, pursuing medicine. ‘I picked up a mic one day and everything changed. I heard the journalist’s siren song and couldn’t pull away.’ That was how she ended up at Daystar University (Electronic Media) and Aga Khan University (MA, Digital Comms). But white coat dreams linger ‘because I am still young.’ When she's not digitally curating stories, this lover of waru (potatoes) finds the kicks binge-watching true crime documentaries or competing in a night of board games.
