Kamau Mutunga

Content Architect

An accomplished media practitioner and documentary script-writer has had stints as feature writer at Nation Media Group-writing for Daily Nation The EastAfrican, Business Daily, Drum magazine and Africareview.com.

Interests in health communication was piqued during undergraduate and graduate studies in Development Communication (University of Nairobi, School of Journalism & Mass Communication), and it was with an easy transition that he rose from Content Editor to Quality Assurance Editor for Health at Standard Group Plc.

Kamau has particular fascination with the intersection between African cultures and health: How come not paying ruracio (bride price) affects fertility? How does smearing mafuta ya nguruwe (pig cud) on children (before going upcountry) create immunity against whooping cough and relatives with ‘bad eyes’?

In fact, he won the CNN Multichoice African Journalist of the Year Award for a sports story titled Animal body parts and snake blood on the pitch’ which was a peek at soccer and superstition. Kamau also received a CNN Journalist of the Year Commendation for a business story that dissected the Placebo-Effect on consumers: Does changing corporate colours and slogans lead to increased profits?

When not editing stories written in words ‘that can melt a mountain’, he loves long drives while listening to Earl Kluge, Isaiah Katumwa and Manu Dibango. Pitching a tent in the bush and cooking using open fire away from civilization is also not far from his beaten  track. So is binge watching documentaries on spies and espionage missions -which like journalism is the gathering of information- with particular focus on their application to investigating medical fraud and corruption in health systems.

Sara Okuoro

Digital Curator

Also known as Asha Fox, this multimedia journalist with a heart for health and a passion for digital storytelling, is a lover of all things elephant. Afterall, elephants are the largest land animals with capacity to communicate over long distances with infrasound!

With red as her favourite colour, Sara brings a fun and energetic approach to work, a reflection of her infectious sunny disposition which she transfers to storytelling with a keen eye for detail and a knack for connecting with audiences.

It is normal for her to move from the digital desk, television live show and still present news on radio all within the hour!

In another life, Sara whose interest in health women and children’s health, food and nutrition, would have been a white coater, pursuing medicine. ‘I picked up a mic one day and everything changed. I heard the journalist’s siren song and couldn’t pull away.’

That was how she ended up at Daystar  (Electronic media) and Aga Khan University (MA, Digital Comms). But white coat dreams are still there ‘because I am still young.’

When she’s not digitally curating stories, this lover of waru (potatoes) finds the kicks binge-watching true crime documentaries or competing in a night of board games.

Ironically, Timon’s first love was architecture. Sketching designs as a young dreamer, he envisioned a future of blueprints and buildings. But joining the high school Journalism Club, producing the school magazine, sparked a passion for media and filmmaking and on to Kenya Institute of Mass Communication and stints at Nation Media Group and the Standard Group.

Covering the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics during the pandemic remains a career high, punctuated with Ferdinand Omanyala’s historic 100m semi-final as “No Kenyan had ever done that before.”

Little wonder he joined the high school journalism club, penning poems and sports stories. That set the stage for rebellion: His parents pushed for a degree in Literature and teaching career.

He dug in his heels for media to amplify the voiceless, graduating with a degree in Journalism (Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology) in between short courses on Digital Reporting, Fact-Checking and New Media.

Ollinga has had stints at Fish FM, The Standard Group and Digital Editor at TUKO with the 2022 a Runner-up Health Reporting Digital Category Award during the Media Council of Kenya’s Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA), being a career high.

Glorias Chepkoech

Access Control Executive

My National Youth Service training in 2022 was a baptism by fire: dawn drills, cleaning, endless running, collective punishments-for one recruit’s mistake- relentless discipline. Think of sleeping at 11 pm and waking up at 2am! But those seven grueling months forged resilience. Transitioning to National Building for another seven months was a relief (going to bed at 7pm, no more 2am wake-up calls or collective punishments), yet the lessons stuck: teamwork under pressure, precision in chaos.

I am also a plant operator graduate from Yatta School of Agriculture in 2024, besides my proficiency in computer packages which I use as a frontline office assistant.

I now channel that same discipline: managing calls, documents, communications and essential administrative support with military efficiency.

Beyond the front desk, I love soccer, cheering Arsenal, a team that, like me, fights hard for victory. It is the third most successful English Premier League side, you know.

I also love chips and chicken: They are cheap, tasty, easy to cook.

Almost forgot: From my NYS days, my health interests are in physical exercises. They improve health and fitness. I should know!

Boy!, she can cook up a storm in form of rice and beef stew.

She almost took to nursing, but the pen was mightier than the stethoscope leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication and Journalism from Moi University. But the passion for health remained and morphed into a health features writer covering human rights, policy and equity in health at The People Daily before rising to editor at The Standard Group Plc. Her career highlight, however, was being Coordinator of the Ghetto Mirror, a community newspaper ran by the Shining Hope for Communities, which published human-interest stories in more than 12 slums in Nairobi. As a trainee of the Internews Network in Kenya, this lover of bright colours especially orange, was among the cohort of Science journalists who extensively covered HIV and was nominated for the 2011 David Astor Journalism Awards. Kamau Mutunga

Sara Okuoro
Also known as Asha Fox, this multimedia journalist with a heart for health and a passion for digital storytelling, is a lover of all things elephant. After all, elephants are the largest land animals with the capacity to communicate over long distances with infrasound! With red as her favourite colour, Sara brings a fun and energetic approach to work, a reflection of her infectious sunny disposition which she transfers to storytelling with a keen eye for detail and a knack for connecting with audiences. It is normal for her to move from the digital desk, television live show and still present news on the radio all within the hour! In another life, Sara, whose interest in women's and children’s health, food and nutrition, would have been a white coater, pursuing medicine. ‘I picked up a mic one day and everything changed. I heard the journalist’s siren song and couldn’t pull away.’ That was how she ended up at Daystar University (Electronic Media) and Aga Khan University (MA, Digital Comms). But white coat dreams linger ‘because I am still young.’ When she's not digitally curating stories, this lover of waru (potatoes) finds the kicks binge-watching true crime documentaries or competing in a night of board games.

Robert Amalemba
This seasoned journalist and boxing buff honed his writing and editing skills with The Password, the campus magazine at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology before embarking on the real newsroom grind with Business Today and Standard Group Plc. His interests in health encompass public health with a defining moment being the Covid-19 Pandemic which nudged him towards infectious and chronic diseases Mental Health which for years went unnoticed and ‘I feel compelled to raise awareness’. He is also fascinated by medical innovations that advance diagnosis and treatment. Amalemba whiles his time listening to diverse debates staged at Speaker’s Corner on YouTube and rewatching boxing bouts, with Deontay ‘The Bronze Bomber’ Wilder as his favourite. Deontay, a former truck driver took up boxing to support the medical expenses of his daughter who was born with spina bifida (incomplete closing of the spine)- leading to thrilling heavy-weight knockouts. He is also an avid bible reader and wouldn’t have minded taking out Paul, Gideon and the Ethiopian Eunuch (who braved desert bandits en route to Israel) for lunch!
