Who We Are
Willow Health Media is Kenya’s first independent, digital newsroom dedicated exclusively to health and science journalism. It is a nonprofit organisation where evidence meets storytelling, turning complex health issues into clear, compelling narratives. Founded in 2024, Willow was born out of a belief that an informed public is essential to achieving health equity. Like its namesake the resilient willow tree, our work is rooted, healing, and far-reaching.
Some communities in Kenya like the Kikuyu, Kalenjins and the Maasai use the bark of willow trees for bone and muscle pain relief. This makes “Willow Health Media” an aptly inspired name for a health-focused outlet. We tell stories that explain complex health issues, humanise data and hold systems accountable, all while giving voice to the most marginalised communities.
The founding team at Willow Health Media began their journey at the Health & Science Desk at the Standard Group, Kenya’s oldest media house since 1902.
Our mission is to empower citizens with accurate, actionable, and engaging health information, bridging the gap between science, policy and the everyday lives of Kenyans. This is captured in our motto: Empowering Health Through Knowledge.
Willow Health Media is supported by the Gates Foundation’s Global Media Partnerships program.
